Album of the Day #4

Kind of Blue by Miles Davis

This album is the quintessential jazz record.  Besides Miles Davis - who, besides being viewed as one of the greatest trumpet players of all time, is also a skillful jazz improviser and writer - this album had
Bill Evans on piano, and John Coltrane on tenor sax, both of whom were extremely important to the development of Jazz music in their own right.  This album consists of 5 songs, each conveying an extremely different mood through their tempos and phrasing; from the cheery and easy "Freddie Freeloader" to the sad and reminiscent "Blue in Green."  The album has virtuoso solos from all the instruments in the sextet, but does not sound forced, nor top heavy, which usually happens in bands completely comprised of virtuoso musicians.  This album could be the most important American Album made, as it transcended its own genre, influencing the classical, rock and popular music of it time, and still influences music today; and is also an extraordinary example of America's original music style- Jazz.
